It’s a new age question that deserves some thought: Should I use my Waterpik water flosser before I brush my teeth or after? We’re glad you asked!
Brushing your teeth twice per day and flossing once per day is the recommendation set forth by the ADA (American Dental Association) to aid in a healthy mouth. This is also the recommendation to avoid plaque buildup which leads to cavities and even long-term gum issues such as periodontal disease. At North Carolina Oral Surgery and Orthodontics, we take your dental health seriously. If you have questions regarding orthodontics, oral surgery, or Waterpiks do not hesitate to reach out to our Raleigh NC Orthodontists and Oral Surgeons. We’re here to help!

Flossing Regularly is a Healthy Habit to Establish
To avoid the displeasure of the disappointing “we found cavities” speech from your dentist or dental hygienist, take steps towards a healthier mouth by flossing regularly. There are many different types of floss including traditional floss, flavored floss, floss picks, and Waterpiks. Many orthodontic patients find that the Waterpik water flosser is ideal for removing debris from braces due to the ease of use.
Braces can be hard to maneuver lodged food and the Waterpik can easily (and gently) remove the debris by spraying a stream of steady water between the teeth. This action is not only removing any food that can get stuck on braces but also has a high percentage of plaque removal.

Flossing Before Brushing Debate
If brushing your teeth before flossing remember that the food particles which are more difficult to remove will remain until you floss. Therefore, our recommendation is to consider using your Waterpik water flosser first before brushing your teeth. This will allow the stuck-on debris to dislodge and then you can easily brush the remaining area free of all particles.
