Braces | NCOSO

Orthodontic treatment is available for anyone who wants to perfect their smile! Gone are the days of braces just being for kids because today everyone is straightening their teeth and improving their smile. With the advancements in technology, orthodontic treatment is more comfortable, more esthetic, and more affordable.

Do I need braces?

Orthodontics is not merely for improving the aesthetics of the smile; orthodontic treatment improves bad bites which are known as ‘malocclusions.’ Malocclusions occur as a result of tooth or jaw misalignment. Malocclusions affect the way you smile, chew, clean your teeth, or feel about your smile.

According to studies by the American Association of Orthodontists, untreated malocclusions can result in a variety of problems:

  • Crowded teeth are more difficult to properly brush and floss, which may contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease
  • Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping
  • Crossbites can result in unfavorable growth and uneven tooth wear
  • Open bites can result in tongue-thrusting habits and speech impediments

Types of Braces

The three common types of braces are traditional metal braces, clear ceramic braces, or Invisible Aligners (Invisalign®). Metal Braces are the most traditional and common type of braces. They are also more comfortable today than they have ever been before! Metal braces are made of high-grade stainless steel and straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires.

Clear Braces

Clear Braces | NCOSO

Clear Braces are also known as “Ceramic Braces.” They are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. While they are visually less prominent, they do require a little more attention to oral hygiene and care as ceramic braces are slightly more brittle than their metal counterparts.

Ceramic or clear braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients with cosmetic concerns. Invisible braces can provide you with a beautiful smile without the look of metal-colored braces. Clear braces are unnoticeable and take away some of the stigmas that come with braces. Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces but have clear brackets that blend in with the teeth. There are options to use tooth-colored wires as well.

Cleaning and Maintenance

While they are visually less prominent, they can require more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are more brittle than traditional metal braces. To keep the clean, clear color, a small amount of additional attention is needed. Patients and doctors also indicate that this form of braces is much less painful on the mouth, lips, and gums than metal braces.
